40 Summer Activities To Do With The Kiddos

It’s Summer finally! How many parents are so glad to be done with homework, sports, recitals, concerts and all school activities for 3 months? I know we are! While we are all happy to be out of school, sometimes finding things to do with the kids for 3 months can be really difficult. The “we’ve done it all” feeling comes around, but really there are still tons of easy activities that can be done with the kiddos. We have compiled a list for you, that is half the battle.

  1. Visit a nearby museum that you have never been to before or one that you have been to a few times. Museums around Richmond.
  2. Play outside in the rain or make your own rain by using a sprinkler or any old hose!
  3. Invite friends over for a game day or even a game night if you are super brave.
  4. Go out and play at a sports park! Bowling, mini golf, pool, arcade games. Yelp’s List of Local Sports Parks.
  5. Decorate your walkways with chalk, no one is too old to be creative with chalk!
  6. Go on a fun day trip to a city or town near you.
  7. Make homemade ice cream.
  8. Have breakfast in bed, make a game of it. Have kids take turns being the server.
  9. Fly a kite!
  10. Visit a local farmers market. List of Local Farmer’s Markets around RVA.
  11. Play croquet in the yard or bocci ball!
  12. Have a puzzle race — use 100 piece puzzles and see who can finish first.
  13. Go to a waterpark
  14. Picnic! Visit a state park or your own backyard and have a picnic.
  15. Go to a botanical garden. Richmond has a beautiful garden center at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
  16. Get the summer homework done!! It isn’t fun, but at least you will get it done and out of the way.
  17. Experiment with new hairdo’s. Let the kids try out non-permanent coloring in their hair or maybe a little bit of gel to spike the hair.
  18. Take a walk early in the morning and take a bird book with you!
  19. Let the kids cook dinner and even plan some dinners.
  20. If you are brave enough, have a few of the kids’ friends over for a sleepover.
  21. Find a place to pick local berries! There are a couple local places to pick Blueberries and Strawberries.
  22. Go camping! If you are a first time camper, try camping in the backyard first or in your living room with sleeping bags. While you are camping in the backyard, you can stargaze and make smores!
  23. Catch lightning bugs on a summer night.
  24. Go on a family bike ride.
  25. Old Classic – meet up with friends at the playground.
  26. Go to a drive in movie theater. Check out the local Goochland Drive-In.
  27. Go to a matinee movie or a $1 movie. Here is the list of local $1 movie info for this summer.
  28. Do a fun craft – One idea is to press summer flowers into a 3D photo.
  29. Find a place to go kayaking or canoeing. If you do not have a kayak or canoe, google some places where you can rent them.
  30. Go to a fun diner and let the kids sit up at the counter, they will enjoy spinning on the stools.
  31. Teach the grandparents how to skype or facetime.
  32. Build a lego castle.
  33. Make paper airplanes — they won’t do much damage around the house.
  34. Make photo books or gifts for family online. Grandma would love to receive one out of the blue or save it for a Christmas gift!
  35. Build a fort
  36. Make your own pizzas day
  37. Go see an air show
  38. Go to the zoo. Richmond has a zoo in Chesterfield.
  39. Go to a county fair or carnival.
  40. Go to nearby state parks. Here is a list of State Parks in VA.
