Powhatan, Virginia Real Estate and Community Information

The community of Powhatan has been known by several names throughout history. The original name of the area was Scottsville. That name changed to Powhatan Court House and then Powhatan Courthouse. The community took its name from Chief Powhatan, the father of the famous Pocahontas.

One of the city’s claims to fame can be found in Shiloh Baptist Church. It is here that The Lord Over Jordan hangs. This painting is one of the most famous works created by Julien Binford.

About the Community

Powhatan County was first settled in the early 1700s by French Huguenots. The county was officially created in 1777 by The Virginia General Assembly. As soon as the first courthouse was built, the city was given the name Scottsville after revolutionary war hero General Charles Scott. It was not until 1850 that a small section of land was annexed, forming what we now know as Powhatan County.

The area has over 28,000 residents but remains unincorporated. This means that Powhatan is not officially a city. Locals and residents of surrounding cities refer to Powhatan as a community. Even though it has not been incorporated, Powhatan is still one of the fastest growing areas in Virginia.

Get Out and Play

The community has an excellent parks department. It is the mission of the department to provide spaces for residents and tourists alike to enjoy nature in a safe way. The department holds tight to the idea that physical activity keeps bodies and minds fit. Because this belief is held, there are diverse recreational opportunities available to anyone who wishes to take part in them.

When you move to Powhatan, expect more than one resident to suggest that you visit Fighting Creek Park. The park has new playground equipment, eight trails, a waterfall, an amphitheater, covered picnic shelters, and a concession stand. You and your family can easily spend an entire day in the park enjoying the sights and sounds of nature.

If you or your children like to play sports, you can find a variety of leagues to join in Powhatan. Community leagues can be joined whether your child wants to play baseball or soccer. You can also take part in a sport if you choose to do so.

Getting Involved in the Community

Volunteering in your new community is one of the best ways to get to know the area and its people. You and your family have a variety of choices when it comes to community involvement. You can join 4-H, Friends of the Library, Powhatan County Fair Association, Powhatan Junior Women’s Club, Relay for Life, or The Powhatan County Historical Society. If you want to get involved in your community, you have ample opportunity to do so.

Learning in Powhatan

If you have children, you will be pleased to know that Powhatan has excellent public schools. There are three elementary schools, a middle school, a junior high, and a high school in the community. The mission of the district is to provide all students an education that prepares them for college or a career. The school system works hard to integrate technology into the classroom in order to ready students to compete in the world economy.

Adults who wish to attend school can enroll in J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, more commonly known as Reynolds Community College. Enroll in the college whether you are seeking a first degree or want to make yourself more attractive for that big promotion at work.

Exploring History

Powhatan is rich with history. Many of the community’s attractions and activities are based on the area’s cultural heritage. Courthouse Village acts as a centerpiece for the area. Powhatan Historical Society is an excellent place to visit if you want to learn more about the birth and growth of the county.

Other activities and attractions in the community include James River’s boat ramps, Powhatan Fairgrounds, Belmead Mansion, The Mill at Fine Creek, and various Civil war sites. Anyone who considers themselves to be a history buff will fall in love with this area immediately.

If you really want to get a feel for the area, Powhatan’s Driving Tour is the perfect choice of activities. The tour takes about three hours by car. You will drive by historic homes and churches as you travel gorgeous by-ways. You can see a map of the tour on The County of Powhatan’s site.
